palabras y sonrisas

wow! amazing is all i can really say. slept well despite the time difference. woke up to a gorgeous day with an incredible view of the mountains, hillside and city. couldn't take my eyes off it. drank cafe on my balcony in a lush white robe. i caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror...who is this woman?

i headed into the city. es buen tiempo hoy. my driver began to speak in english, i asked her to please habla en espanol, necesito practicar. she did and then asked if i'd like to ride in the front seat...claro! i replied. she told me of the city, of her family and where she grew up. she told me of her favorite part of mallorca. she told me of the other islands. she told me lots of other interesting stuff too, but it was in spanish so i didn't quite understand. once in town i wandered aimlessly. just listening to the people talk. oh the people, they are so kind and so beautiful. so patient with my spanish, which i've come to realize is just a bunch of miscellaneous words. i try to string them together to form some type of sentence. combine that with hand guestures and a smile and hope for the best. this is dangerous because the few phrases i have mislead people so i get great detailed responses to which i pretty much just smile at or say "si". but so far it's working out. most people speak english as well, but i keep pretending they don't. everyone speaks hand guestures.

i loved los apartamentos, las ventanas con "shutters". i spoke where i could and even where i couldn't. compre helado. yep, it's better here. the two best parts of my day...buying panties in mallorca. yes, still no luggage. nada. no hair gel, no makeup, no deodorant, no jewelry, no socks, no camera, no clothing other than what i flew in with, and no panties. hoping it would still come, i was conservative in my shopping. a few shirts (9 euros!) and ropa interior. (there's another word, but i couldn't quite understand...maybe medias or pengas..no se...) and yep, it's better here too. the second best part of my day...having the gentleman at the front desk tell me "tu hablas espanol muy bueno". my reply, gracias pero se unas pocas palabras. and with that i smiled.

You're so great- always try to speak their language. They will bring you into the fold. I love your enthusiasm!

muy bueno senorita! that's about all I know, but I met a fantastic spanish couple here in nepal and look forward to visiting their country someday, as well. green with envy here. the world is so small yet so big. so many places to still see. i can't wait. many, many chapters still in this book to visit them (see previous post). :) looking forward to it.....
